Aim is to decrease the number of traffic accidents and fatalities

Rate of traffic accidents in our community in 2009 was double of the European Union average. Against our 260.000 population, in 2009, 44 people died and 1286 people were injured in 3971 accidents. Most of these accidents happened in Nicosia and Kyrenia.

Road Safety Education and Campaigning project funded by EU aims to contribute to the solution of road safety problem. With the campaign we will provide information on the major factors causing road accidents, aim a positive change of behaviour. Besides, the capacity building activities will be implemented to support the stakeholders to sustain the campaign and trainings. We invite all organisations and individuals to be a part of change and the solution.

Problems, Reasons and Solutions are all clear
Trends are similar everywhere in the world. Road safety is a global problem. Violation of speed limits happens to be in the first row of the list of factors causing these accidents. It is followed by failure to keep a safe distance with the other vehicles in traffic. Impaired driving with the influence of alcohol and unsafe maneuvre are among the other major factors causing road accidents.
Analysis of accident reasons and consequences address the same: PEOPLE!

Road safety Education and Campaigning project targets all segments of the society. However, young drivers being among the leading risky road users, children being the future of our community and professional drivers spending most of their time on roads are among the priority target groups.

This is the reason Road Safety Education and Campaigning project is focused on change of behaviour with a series of training and campaign activities. Developing a sustainable capacity to implement similar activities in the future is regarded as a key issue of the project.
